BEIJING, Dec. 14 () -- A Chinese martial arts master has died in hospital, 42 days after he was knocked out during a Sanshou, or free combat, competition in South China's Hainan Province.Shangguan Pengfei was rushed to a hospital after he collapsed following a blow to the head on Oct. 31 during the Kungfu King Free Combat Championship in Haikou. The 23-year-old fighter from Henan Province remained in a coma thereafter until he was declared dead on Monday.The accident has sparked a wave of public concern over the safety of Sanshou competition, which has become a commercial hit in recent years in China, as athletes are not required to wear any protective gear in competitions despite elbows and kicks being allowed.Some blame the opponent for violating the spirit of sportsmanship after the blow to the back of Shangguan's head, which is forbidden under the rules, while others have questioned how Shangguan could have passed the organizer's medical check given he had already been knocked out in the recent two months before the competition in Haikou.According to international rules, any athlete who is knocked out is not allowed to compete in a fight for six months.The umpire of the competition has also come under fire over his competence as he failed to stop the bout.But the Chinese Wushu Administration Center, which overseas the combat sport, was quick to defend the legitimacy of the Haikou tournament and the safety of the sport at large."After watching video replays of the competition, the jury panel came to the conclusion that neither Shangguan nor his opponent violated the rules and the umpire fulfilled his duty," Wang Yulong, deputy head of the Chinese Wushu Administration Center, told a press conference on Wednesday.Zhao Jun, an official at the Henan Provincial Sports Bureau, denied reports that Shangguan had been knocked out over the past one year. "It's absolutely false," said Zhao.Wang also confirmed that Shangguan's family will receive no less than 300,000 yuan (about 47,250 U.S. dollars) in compensation.There had been speculation that the death of Shangguan would force other Sanshou competitions to be delayed or even canceled, but Wang dismissed such rumors."The rest events on the 2012 calendar will go on as planned," he said. PARIS, Dec. 30 () -- French health agency confirmed on Friday that 20 cases of cancer were reported in women with breast implants of a French brand.As of Tuesday, "there were three cases of lymphoma, 15 cases of breast adenocarcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer, one case of adenocarcinoma of the lung, and one case of acute myeloid leukemia," said the French Health Products Safety Agency (AFSSAPS), referring to allegedly faulty implants produced by the Poly Implant Prothese (PIP).But "no accountability has been established to date between these cancers and the wearing of PIP implants," the agency said.The French Health Ministry last week advised 30,000 women to have their PIP implants removed because of an increased risk of rupture to avoid the risk of cancer though no conclusive evidence was found linking to the disease.The recommendation came after eight cases, mainly breast cancer, were reported among women with PIP implants.Authorities in other countries also advised women to consult their doctors over the implants.The French company PIP was once the world's third-largest producer of silicone implants which sold its products to tens of thousands of women in over 65 countries and regions, mainly in South America and Western Europe.The company was found to replace the medical-grade silicone in its implants with unauthorized material that caused abnormally high rupture rates of its implants. After that, its products were banned and the company went bankrupt in 2010.The U.S. government already raised the alarm over the company in 2000.
