Gucci Suitcasesby Ben OchiengNAIROBI, May 20 () -- Current American volleyball CEO Doug Beal toured Kenya recently from where he kicked off the world tour for his presidential campaign for the forthcoming elections of the Federation for the International Volleyball (FIVB) scheduled for September.Beal' s visit to Nairobi was also a show of support to the Africa Women' s Club Championships as well as a forum to seek closer collaboration with various national federations in Africa as he seeks to develop a stronger relationship with the continent. However, during his Nairobi visit, which was his first port of his worldwide tour in drumming up support for his candidacy, Beal expressed his resentment with the world body over what he termed as 'lack of democratic principles where the FIVB President has always been elected unopposed."In September, the volleyball world will have a truly unique opportunity to democratically and openly elect their new leader. For the first time in many years, the FIVB' s 220 national federations will be able to express their individual vote for the future of our sport and I am honoured to be part of this historic moment," he told journalists in Nairobi on Friday."The association has never had open, clear elections for president that features more than one candidate. It should be left to national associations to make independent decisions on who they want to elect as president."Beal said the world volleyball deserves a leader who understands the global needs and challenges of the sport and added that having contributed to volleyball in many different roles in over 100 countries, he knew firsthand the global challenges national federations of all sizes face."My experience in bringing success across many different platforms has prepared me for the FIVB Presidency and for the next chapter in our sport' s history."Beal came face to face with the obstacles his candidacy faced when the chairman of the Kenya Volleyball Federation Waithaka Kioni reminded him of the challenges ahead bearing in mind that the confederations in Asia, Africa and America have openly thrown their weight behind candidate Ary Graca of Brazil.Outgoing FIVB President Wei Jizhong of China will not seek re-election. The other candidate is Chris Schacht, the President of Australia Volleyball Federation."Confederation presidents do not speak on behalf of others. Foundations of independence should rest with national federations whose opinion should be respected. Participation of other candidates should be welcomed and their visions listened to since they bring along with them different personal style."He admitted that he has in the past not had a significant relationship with Africa but nevertheless promised his will be a quick study. He said as the next FIVB president, he intends to use his vast experience spanning over 40 years both as a player and head coach of the US National Team to bring real change to the game. Most of those who support his candidacy are from his own country whereas those voting presidents mainly from African countries who graced his launch bid in Nairobi remained tight-lipped when  asked them where they will cast their vote.Lloy Ball, four-time Olympian and Olympic gold medallist in 2008 says having known Beal for 20 years, he believes Doug represents a leader with a global vision who knows what inspires athletes; and drives coaches; motivates national federations. "I cannot wait to have Doug Beal as FIVB president."Former U.S. Volleyball President who is also a former FIVB Committee member Beck Howard said volleyball needs a leader who can be trusted and has the ability to listen to those around him and make the right decision for world volleyball whereas the CEO, U.S. Olympic Committee Scott Blackmun said he had no doubt Beal would make a great leader for volleyball internationally. The 65-year-old Beal competed as a member of the U.S. men' s national team from 1970 to 1976 and was named head coach of the US men' s national team in 1977.With him as head coach of the national team, the United States captured its first-ever gold medal in men' s volleyball at the 1984 Olympics. In 2005, Beal was named CEO of U.S. Volleyball, the governing body of Volleyball in the U.S.
