LUSAKA, Dec. 6 () -- The Zambian government and the southern African country's biggest farmers' body have agreed to export 1 million tons of maize to neighboring countries where there is a deficit, the Zambia Daily Mail reported on Tuesday. The government was initially hesitant to export the excessive maize because it wanted to satisfy local consumption. But the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) executive director, Ndambo Ndambo, said the government agreed at a recent meeting to export 1 million tons of maize, the majority going to Zimbabwe. "Government would have benefited from maize export had the decision been made much earlier. It is late but the decision still remains...the problem is that some of the maize is soaked, rotten and is now in grade two and three (lower quality)," the official was quoted as saying. The official also said the maize should be sold at competitive prices, adding that the government should compare the price of the commodity in neighboring countries. "There is a shortage of grain on the international market and if our maize could be sold at 120 U.S dollars per ton, traders can export by sea to countries like Mexico and Argentina," he added.Zambia has witnessed a bumper harvest of maize-its staple crop- in the last two seasons. During the 2009/2010 season, the southern African nation produced 2.8 million tons of maize while during the 2010/2011 season, maize production increased to 3.2 million tons. However challenges of poor storage facilities has resulted in hundreds of the produce being damaged. Zambia's annual consumption of maize stands at 1.6 million tons.
