ADEN, Yemen, June 11 () -- A total of 33 al-Qaida militants and six army soldiers were killed during intensive clashes in Yemen's southern province of Abyan early Monday, a government official said. The Yemeni army troops have managed to regain control over several villages nearby al-Qaida-held town of Jaar after intensive clashes with fighters of the terrorist group, leaving at least 25 militants and six soldiers killed, the local government official told  on condition of anonymity."The al-Qaida militants failed to confront the army push and ceded their sites in Hassin, Rawa and two other villages on the outskirts of Jaar town," the government official said."Army soldiers are now patrolling the villages near Jaar and resized two tanks along with other military vehicles form the al- Qaida," he added. An army commander said that the Yemeni air forces hit al-Qaida compound in downtown Jaar late on Sunday night, with no immediate reports of casualties.Pro-government militiamen and troops of the elite Republican Guard force attacked al-Qaida militants on Monday outside the coastal town of Shakra on the Gulf of Aden, which is under al-Qaid 's control, according to tribal sources."About eight al-Qaida militants were killed and six troops were wounded in battles along a main road that links Shakra with Wadea town in Abyan," the source said. The Yemeni government troops have stepped up military operations in Abyan in order to oust al-Qaida militants who have seized control of large swaths in the restive south during last year's political turmoil.Government troops and reinforcements of counter-terrorism units assembled by the Yemeni military began last month offensives on al- Qaida bastions in Abyan, which made living conditions of thousands of displaced residents worsened.Senior leaders of the Yemeni military, with support of U.S. counter-terrorism experts, have vowed to uproot the al-Qaida's regional bases from Yemen.

MADRID, Jan. 23 () -- Real Madrid entertains struggling Malaga as the Spanish Primera Liga reaches the halfway point of its season.    Manuel Pellegrini's side needs to pick up the pieces following the away defeat to Athletic Club Bilbao last weekend, which left it five points behind FC Barcelona.    That five point gap could have increased to eight if Barca wins in Valladolid on Saturday, meaning Real can afford no mistakes against Malaga.    Gonzalo Higuain is still injured so Karim Benzema continues in attack for the home side and Cristiano Ronaldo looks for his first goal of 2010.    Kaka ended his scoring jinx in a friendly Madrid played in Albania on Wednesday, but the players would probably have benefited from resting rather than flying to Eastern Europe and back, even though the trip earned the club around two million Euros.    Malaga meanwhile would no doubt be delighted for the chance to increase funds so easily.    The club, whose President Fernando Sanz is a former Real Madrid defender, has an annual budget of 12 million euros - the same amount Cristiano Ronaldo alone earns in a season.    A 1-0 win over Getafe last week lifted Malaga out of the relegation zone and Juan Muniz's side is unbeaten in seven Primera Liga matches.    The bad news is that Malaga travels without influential midfielder Apono, who damaged a thigh in the Getafe game, while Juanito is suspended.    Sunday also sees a derby in the south of Madrid as Getafe entertains Atletico.    Despite losing in Malaga, Getafe has been impressive of late, while Atletico is almost impossible to predict. Quique Sanchez's Flores side has won four straight games in La Liga, but was poor against Celta in the Copa del Rey on Thursday.    New signing Thiago Cardoso could make his debut in the Atletico midfield.    Third placed Valencia will expect all three points on its visit to Tenerife. A win for Valencia would leave Tenerife coach Juan Luis Oltra, who is from Valencia himself, in deep trouble after his side slipped into the bottom three last week.    Xerez coach Nestor Gorosito makes his debut for the bottom of the table side with a home game against Osasuna. Xerez has only eight points and just one win all season.    Zaragoza also needs to improve and will hope to take advantage of Villarreal's poor form in the New Year in the El Madrigal Stadium.    Second from bottom Zaragoza has still to win in four matches under new coach Jose Aurelio Gay.    Sporting Gijon entertains a Racing Santander team that looks to be on the point of selling star player Sergio Canales to Real Madrid and Espanyol entertains Mallorca in the El Prat Cornella Stadium.    Espanyol has been unconvincing of late and needs a win, while Mallorca is fourth in the table and aiming for a place in the Champions League.    Mallorca could suffer as a result of its efforts in the Copa del Rey, when it suffered a surprise defeat at home to Getafe this Thursday.
ISLAMABAD, March 11 () -- Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Sunday did not indicate to follow the Supreme Court's orders to write to the Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. The apex court has already formally charged the Prime Minister of contempt of court for not sending the letter to the Swiss authorities. The court last week issued another order to Gilani to write the letter and do not take advice from others in the matter."I will not take any advice for writing to Swiss authorities for reopening of graft cases against the President but will follow the constitution," the Prime Minister told reporters in Lahore when being asked about the Supreme Court's observation that he should write to Swiss authorities and do not wait for any advice. The country's anti-corruption body says that nearly 60 million US dollars have been transferred to Swiss banks from Pakistan and the court wants the money to be returned.Gilani said that any inquiry into the Swiss bank issue should have been referred to the Parliament which was also the supreme body to re-write the Constitution.Legal experts are of the view that the court can grant a 6- month jail term and de-seat the Prime Minister if he is found guilty of contemt of court. The Prime Minister said that all over the world the Presidents, the Prime Ministers, who are executive head of the governments, and Foreign Ministers had immunity as long as they were in power.

ADEN, Yemen, March 18 () -- Yemeni warplanes bombed several bases of the al-Qaida terrorist group in the southern province of Abyan on Sunday, killing at least 18 terrorists and injuring dozens of others, a government official told .Heavy shelling by the Yemeni military aircrafts and U.S. naval vessels on the sea hit the al-Qaida bases in and around the city of Jaar, Abayn's second largest city, killing at least 18 terrorists and injuring dozens of others, the local official said on condition of anonymity."A number of fortifications and checkpoints belonging to the insurgents were completely destroyed in the bombing," he said.A witness told  anonymously that some residential buildings in the city were also damaged in the heavy shelling."The strikes demolished more than four houses located in the center of Jaar city. Many people fled their houses for fear of repeated air raids," the witness said. But it was not clear whether there were any civilian casualties, the official said.Residents in Jaar's neighboring city of Luader said they could see the jets hovering over the region and hear the bombing sound.Jaar, along with three other southern towns were seized by al- Qaida militants in May last year. The Yemeni army and security forces have recently been attacked by the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula who also frequently kidnapped foreigners to force the government to meet their demands across the restive south.Fears mounted that al-Qaida's regional wing may exploit the security collapse in expanding its foothold and taking control over the southern and eastern lawless parts of the country.
