DHAKA, March 21 () -- The Bangladeshi government Wednesday announced a daily 12-hour suspension in power supply for industries in order to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in rural areas for meeting farmers' irrigation demand.Officials said Bangladesh's Energy Ministry made the decision at a meeting on how to ensure uninterrupted power supply for irrigation during the ongoing Boro (winter) season which pertains to rice cultivation in waterlogged low-lying or medium lands during December to April.Saiful Hasan Chowdhury, senior spokesman of the state-owned Power Development Board (PDB), told that "industries have been asked from the meeting to keep their production shut every day from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time to help ensure uninterrupted power supply to the farmers."Chowdhury said an additional 1,500 megawatt of electricity will be needed for irrigation purpose during the current season.Of the total 13.8 million hectares of arable land in Bangladesh, about 74 percent is reportedly used for rice cultivation. The Aman (summer paddy) covers about 51 percent of rice cultivation period while Boro 39 percent and Aus (a kind of rice) 9 percent."We need to ensure eight-hour uninterrupted power supply in rural areas for meeting farmers' irrigation demand from 11:00 p.m. (local time) to 7:00 a.m," Tawfiq E Elahi, adviser to Bangladeshi prime minister, told journalists after the meeting Wednesday. He said, "we've to accept the decision as agriculture is our prime priority."The power suspension decision which came into effect from Wednesday will remain in force until the next month when irrigation for Boro rice cultivation is expected to be on wane, Chowdhury said.Bangladesh's all power plants are currently generating around 5, 000 MW power per day against a peak demand of about 5,600 MW, a Bangladesh's PDB official said, adding that some power plants are generating far less than their capacity due to inadequate gas supply.Bangladesh currently faces acute gas shortages, with production at around 2,000 mm cft from 17 of the 24 gas fields per day against demand of more than 2,600 mm cft a day.To help more gas supply to power plants, Abul Kalam Azad, Energy Ministry secretary, said the government also decided to keep CNG filling stations shut for six hours from 3 p.m. every day from Wednesday for two months.
SUVA, June 6 () -- The Methodist Church of Fiji, the largest Christian denomination in the island nation, on Wednesday welcomed the move by the Government to allow Church members to meet at their annual general conference in August.Church General Secretary Reverend Tevita Nawadra told media that they have accepted the permit conditions set out by Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua on Wednesday, after the church was granted the green light to have its annual conference. The Church has also been granted a permit to hold its Standing Committee meetings this month and in July.As the permit conditions, Police Commissioner Naivalurua has highlighted that the Methodist Church must exclude all those activities that will financially burden its members at the three day conference such as the bazaar and choir competition. The Church accepted the decision in good faith as they have waited for the last three years to have a conference, said Nawadra. This is the first since the government canceled conferences in 2009. It is also a change from last year's permit conditions, when the Church group's president and general secretary were not allowed to chair, which caused last year's permit cancellation.Methodist clergy in Fiji have been frustrated that the removal of a repressive law requiring permits for religious meetings has been replaced by a more permanent decree by the current government, or called "interim military regime" by opponents.Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama announced on New Year's Day that the Public Emergency Regulations (PER), which in 2009 granted the police and military extensive powers, would be lifted by Jan. 7.Clergy believed meeting permits would no longer be required but were later disappointed when a new and permanent law a revised Public Order Act subsequently replicated the PER, requiring churches to apply for permits at community police posts.Along with the Fijian chiefly system, the Methodist Church forms a key part of Fiji's social power structure. Of the 280,628 persons identifying themselves as Methodists, 261,972 are Fijians, 5,432 are Indians and 13,224 are from other ethnic communities.
